An alleged drunk driver has a date with court after his vehicle became stuck on a Taranaki state highway median barrier in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Police were called to reports of a vehicle stuck on the median barrier on State Highway 3 near the Waitara River Bridge at about 2.10am on Saturday.
Footage provided to 1News showed wheels spinning as the driver appeared to try moving forward and back from the stranding.
“I don’t think it’s coming off there, buddy,” an onlooker could be heard saying.
Chris Cooper, who was on the scene, told 1News he was driving down State Highway 3 when he noticed oncoming headlights “on a funny angle”.
“[The driver] had slurred speech. His younger mate was in the car… and the driver threw up out his window, so we were just thankful we weren’t standing next to his window when he did it.”
He said a woman had called the police and that they waited for them to attend before leaving.
“A few other people stopped just to wave down cars, so it was handled pretty well by all.”
A 28-year-old man has been summonsed to appear in New Plymouth District Court on July 23 on a driving with excess breath alcohol charge.
