Multiple fire crews and helicopters were responding.
“The fire has now been contained,” FENZ said in a 9pm update. “This means it is no longer growing in size but is still actively burning, meaning smoke will still be in the area for some time.
“Heavy machinery is on its way to the scene to assist with firefighting efforts.
“Two homes were evacuated, with multiple structures remaining under threat.”
The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said SH1 near the fire was temporarily closed. FENZ said the highway would be closed “for some time”.
