Bananas have been seen duct-taped to buses across Wellington with “up to five” of the yellow fruits being removed today.
Photos seen by 1News show bananas taped to the back of the 2 bus and the 18 bus, which both travel between Seatoun and Karori.
The stunt appears to be inspired by the infamous artwork Comedian which consisted of a banana duct-taped to a wall and sold for NZ$10.5m at a New York auction late last month.
Social media users have reacted to the prank, with one Redditor labelling it as “bananas”.
“There may be more out there. Keep your eyes peeled,” another said.
Metlink senior manager of operations Paul Tawharu said the operator has removed “up to five bananas” that had been duct-taped to buses.
“Further bananas will be removed as soon as possible.”
Metlink said bananas were removed as soon as they were detected as part of routine cleaning.
“For the safety of our drivers and passengers, we do not encourage anyone to attach anything to the outside of buses, especially bananas,” Tawharu added.
