An emergency alert has been issued for those in the Auckland suburb of Ōnehunga as a huge fire continues to burn at a waste facility on Wednesday.
The fire at Green Gorilla waste processing facility has been burning for more than three hours, on Victoria St.
A mobile alert from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) warns people in the area should close all windows and doors.
“If the smoke causes respiratory problems, please ring Healthline for free advice on 0800 611 116 or see your doctor if you have breathing difficulties or chest pain,” the alert reads.
“Anyone flying a drone in the Ōnehunga area [needs] to ground it immediately so FENZ can carry out helicopter operations to help put the fire out.”
