One person has died and three others have been injured, one critically, after a two-vehicle crash in Taranaki east of New Plymouth this afternoon.
Police said the crash, which has closed State Highway 3 near Urenui, was reported around 2.30pm.
St John said three ambulances, two helicopters, one manager, one rapid response vehicle and one first responder attended the scene.
“Two patients in a serious condition were transported by road to Taranaki Base Hospital. One person was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.”
NZTA said the road was closed between Wharekauri Rd and Mangamaio Rd.
“Road users are advised to use an alternative route or avoid the area. Continue to follow emergency services on-site or delay your journey,” a spokesperson said.
Easter road toll stands at three
The Taranaki crash brings the preliminary Easter road toll to three.
One person died in a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 12 in Northland on Friday, while another died following a collision between a car and a cyclist near Hastings on Saturday.
The official Easter holiday road toll period was from 4pm on Thursday to 6am on Tuesday.
Last year, seven people died on New Zealand roads during the same period.
