Matty McLean has announced he is leaving the Breakfast show and TVNZ in December, moving to a “wonderful new job”.
McLean has been with the network since 2007, working on Breakfast, 1News, 20/20 and Seven Sharp.
For the past seven years, he’s been a host on Breakfast. He announced the news on the show this morning.
McLean reminisced on his time with Breakfast — describing the moment when he was first asked to host the weather.
“It was a no-brainer. This was dream job kind of stuff.”
He called it a “full circle moment” as he started his career working on the show.
“In the seven years since then, I’ve travelled the length of the country and indeed to parts of the world with this job.
“I’ve met some phenomenal people. Truly, my favourite, favourite part of this job has been our incredible viewers.
“This has been the dream job I always hoped it was, and then some.”
McLean became emotional as he discussed all the changes in his life since he first started hosting Breakfast.
“Personally, since taking the job, I met my partner Ryan, got Otis, our dog, bought a house, got married, and dug up buried treasure, so yes, a lot has happened since that fateful phone call.
“But like all great adventures, there comes a time when you need to bring it to an end in order to begin a new one.”
McLean revealed he had been offered a “wonderful new job” outside of TVNZ — hosting The Hits drive show in 2024 with Polly ‘PJ’ Harding.
“I’m really excited but also very sad to be leaving this team, which I adore, and you, our wonderful, incredible, beautiful, brilliant audience.
“Thank you for embracing me, encouraging me and for giving me the happiest seven years of my life,” he said.
