A New Zealand skydiver has died in Australia after a landing went wrong during a group jump earlier this week.
Liam Newman, 25, died at a rural property in western Queensland on Tuesday.
His workplace iFLY Brisbane Indoor Skydiving confirmed his death in a post on social media.
“He was a much-loved staff member of our team and our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”
The Australian Parachute Federation (APF) said Newman was an experienced skydiver.
“[He had] successfully landed more than 600 jumps since taking up the adventure sport in 2022.”
The federation said it believed his parachute opened and functioned normally but he landed badly and sustained multiple serious injuries.
7News reported Newman lived north of Brisbane.
A GoFundMe page set up to support his family has raised NZ$19,669.
“Liam was a man who dared to push the limits and had his heart set on achieving the world,” organiser Cody Mason said.
“Liam has been my best friend for 20 years, he is my brother and it breaks my heart to be in this position.”
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of the reports of the death of New Zealander in Queensland.
“We have not been approached for consular assistance at this stage.”
