Lorde has announced she’ll soon be releasing her first new single in four years, titled What Was That.
The Kiwi singer-songwriter, whose real name is Ella Yelich O’Connor, posted on her social media revealing her new single would be “out soon”.
The post was a headshot-style photo of Lorde wearing a red shirt with a dripping wet face. It was taken by New York-based photographer Talia Chetrit.
The singer sent followers a voice note on April 15 where she said: “I just wanted to say hi, because everything is about to change. These are the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy. But so right. I’m so ready.”
Earlier this month, she dropped a 15-second snippet of the unreleased song
In the video posted to TikTok on April 10, Lorde was seen wearing a white shirt and jeans while walking through New York City.
“Since I was 17, I gave you everything/Now we wake from a dream, well baby, what was that? What was that?” she sings over a synth beat.
It’s the first sign of a follow up to Lorde’s last album, 2021’s Solar Power. Her other albums are 2013’s Pure Heroine and 2017’s Melodrama.
Last year, she collaborated with British singer Charli XCX on a remix of Girl, so confusing for a re-release of the Grammy award-winning Brat.
