A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder after another man was found dead in his cell at Mt Eden Corrections Facility with “numerous injuries” last week.
The inmate, who can be named as Andrew Chan Chui, 36, was found dead in his cell at around 10am on Friday.
Corrections said the man had been in a double-bunked cell – the other prisoner who had been residing in the cell is now in a single cell.
Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said a post-mortem examination and formal identification were carried out over the weekend.
Another inmate has been charged with Chan Chui’s murder.
“We are in ongoing contact with Mr Chan Chui’s family, and as part of this we are ensuring that they have support in place.”
A 23-year-old man will appear via Audio Visual Link in the Auckland District Court on October 3.
