A man has been charged with murder following the death of a man found on the side of a highway in Waimamaku earlier this month.
A homicide investigation was launched after a 51-year-old man was found seriously injured alongside State Highway 12 shortly before 9am on August 1. He passed away at the scene a short time later
Police seized a 2024 white double-cab Toyota Hilux utility, with a large black bull bar on the front and a flat deck on the back at a nearby property on the same day of the man’s death.
Northland Detective Sergeant Natalie Syddall said a 50-year-old man would appear in Kaikohe District Court on Friday, charged with murder and failing to carry out obligations in relation to a computer search.
She said police had been speaking with a person of interest “early on” and this person had since been charged with murder.
“We are not seeking anyone else in relation to this matter and would like to reassure the community that this appears to be an isolated incident,” she said.
Syddall urged anyone who travelled on State Highway 12 on August 1 between 7.45am and 8.45am to contact police if they had not already done so.
“Motorists who may have dash-cam footage or saw either the vehicle or a person walking on the road near [rural address property identification] numbers 6700-6900, are urged to contact police if you have not already done so.”
This area of interest to police is about 4km south of the Waimamaku township.
Anyone with information could contact police by calling 105, online or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
