Two people have been charged with murder after the death of a man who appeared to have been “run over by his own vehicle” in Auckland’s Point England over the weekend.
Auckland City Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greaves said a homicide investigation was launched after the man was found in the middle of Point England Rd at 11.15pm on Saturday.
He said the victim suffered “multiple injuries and it appears the man has been run over by his own vehicle, which was also stolen during the incident”.
“The vehicle was recovered on Sunday morning and is now undergoing a forensic examination.”
Greaves said police inquiries today led to the arrest of a 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, both from Auckland.
Police will oppose bail when they appear in the Auckland District Court tomorrow, jointly charged with murder.
“These arrests are a positive development, but there’s a long way to go in this investigation, and a significant amount of work remains to be completed,” he said.
“We want to extend our appreciation to members of the public that have assisted with the investigation.”
A post-mortem examination has been completed and formal identification was expected to be carried out in coming days, police said.
“At this stage, there are no indications this is a gang-related incident,” Greaves said earlier today.
He said the community could expect to see an increased police presence in the area in coming days.
Anyone with information was urged to contact police online, or by calling 105.
