Two people have been arrested after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle fleeing police in Palmerston North this afternoon.
Officers signalled a vehicle which had come to their interest travelling on Pioneer Highway to stop around 2.30pm, Inspector Ashley Gurney said.
“A pursuit was initiated and the vehicle was followed to West St, at which point police turned off sirens and lights.”
Police followed the vehicle from a distance to Pitt St, where it struck a pedestrian around 2.42pm.
“A police unit stopped and attended to the person, and remaining units followed to Tremaine Ave,” Gurney said.
“Luckily the pedestrian was not seriously injured.”
The vehicle came to a stop on Amberley Ave after being spiked, and one person was taken into custody.
A second person was tracked to a home on Clarke Ave and was arrested.
Charged were being considered for a 21-year-old man who was sought for his arrest, and the 21-year-old male driver.
“Fleeing driver events are volatile, unpredictable, and high risk to everyone involved,” Gurney said.
“Drivers who choose not to pull over for police when instructed put themselves, police staff, and the public at risk, as this incident demonstrates.
“Fortunately, there were no serious injuries sustained from this incident.”
Inquiries into the incident were ongoing and anyone with information was asked to contact police.
