Two people have been arrested after a police car and several other vehicles were rammed during an alleged fleeing driver incident which ended on Auckland’s Southern Motorway in rush hour this afternoon.
Police received information about a stolen vehicle travelling north near Pukekohe at around 4.30pm.
Inspector Peter Raynes said it was then seen travelling on Porchester Rd in Papakura at 5.08pm.
The vehicle entered The Warehouse Takanini carpark and picked up a female passenger.
Raynes said a police car approached the vehicle, but was rammed along with several other vehicles as the stolen car exited the carpark “erratically”.
“Shortly after, the woman was observed exiting the car with stolen property.”
The Eagle helicopter tracked the vehicle as it continued “travelling recklessly” through the area until it entered the Southern Motorway southbound at Takanini.
The vehicle’s tyres were spiked at the Bombay offramp, before the vehicle re-entered heading north, eventually stopping near Ramarama, Raynes said.
“Police were close behind the vehicle when the driver absconded on foot and ran across the motorway into the surrounding area.”
The man was taken into custody without incident, while the woman was also arrested and stolen property recovered.
Raynes said police were aware several vehicles may have been damaged throughout the incident.
“Police are asking anyone who has had their vehicle damaged or anyone who witnessed the driving behaviour to contact us.”
Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.
