Police have named the man who died in an incident at Ōrere Point, rural east Auckland, following a confrontation with police on Sunday.
He was 45-year-old Faasala Samu Matue.
His death came after a fleeing driver incident, and then a subsequent confrontation where police said he threatened officers with a metal pole.
Police used a Taser and pepper spray, as well as a dog in a bid to subdue him.
He was taken into custody and “quickly became unresponsive,” police previously said.
On Thursday morning, a blessing was conducted at the scene with family and iwi present.
Matue’s cause of death has not yet been determined, but a post-mortem has been completed.
Police said it will await further findings from a pathologist.
“Meanwhile, the critical incident investigation remains ongoing into the wider events that unfolded on Sunday afternoon.
“Police are continuing to ask any witnesses with information or footage to come forward.”
It asked those with information to contact police by calling 105 or online.
The driver in the incident has been charged over alleged previous offending, including aggravated robberies at a Wairau Valley bowling alley on February 14, and a Takapuna bar late on March 1.
“Overall, he faces two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of commission of a crime with a firearm,” police said.
He has also been charged with allegedly impersonating police in relation to the bowling alley incident.
