Another witness in Ponsonby told Newshub a commotion that initially consisted of screaming was made a hell of a lot worse when a car came hurtling down Anglesea St, onto Heke St and drove straight into the crowd.
“I think all the people were scared about that. We didn’t dare go out to watch,” said Li.
Officers were called to what they’ve labelled mass disorder at about 10:20pm.
Police believe things initially boiled over on Ponsonby Rd, spilled down Anglesea Street and into nearby Heke St, where the ruckus eventually ended.
That end came after a 24-year-old man got into a car, allegedly hit three people and crashed into a pole. He’s been charged with injuring with intent.
“I’ve lived here two years. This is the first time I saw chaos at night,” Li said.
“Sometimes I hear someone just cheering, like laughing or something, but this is terrible.”
An evening of chaos that left three in hospital with moderate to serious injuries, and a fourth arrested for allegedly running them down.
