Canadian pop star Celine Dion has condemned former US president Donald Trump’s re-election campaign for the unauthorised use of her music as an interlude at a recent rally.
Dion issued a statement on Saturday, a day after Trump played a video clip of her hit song My Heart Will Go On from the film Titanic at a campaign event in Montana.
“Celine Dion’s management team and her record label, Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc, became aware of the unauthorized usage of the video, recording, musical performance, and likeness of Celine Dion singing My Heart Will Go On at a Donald Trump/JD Vance campaign rally in Montana,” a message posted to Dion’s social media accounts read.
“In no way is this use authorized, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use.
“… And really, THAT song?”
She is far from the first musician to ban Trump from using their work, with bands including Queen and the Rolling Stones sending the former US president cease and desist notices.
Dion made a triumphant return to live singing last month at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, her first performance since being diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) in 2022.
SPS is a rare neurological disorder that causes muscles to spasm.
