A large section of the Waikato Expressway was closed for several hours in both directions this afternoon and evening following a crash that left a motorcyclist dead.
Emergency services were alerted to the single-vehicle crash at around 3pm.
Police said they were responding to the crash and later confirmed a motorcyclist sadly died at the scene after colliding with a median barrier.
“The Serious Crash Unit has been advised. The road is closed and diversions are in place,” they said earlier.
The road reopened around 9.30pm.
Police appealed for anyone with information or footage to get in touch by calling 105 or via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
NZTA said earlier the road was closed between Taupiri and Huntly.
“Follow the directions of emergency services on-site and use an alternate route.”
St John said it sent one ambulance and two rapid response vehicles to the scene just before 3pm.
