Four Nelson schools have lifted precautionary lockdowns as police respond to an ongoing family harm incident.
Motueka St has been closed at the intersection with Tipahi St and the city’s hospital remains partially locked down.
Footage captured by 1News shows armed police at the scene and cordons in place on several streets in the area.
1News has confirmed the schools in lockdown were Nelson College, Victory Primary School, Nelson Intermediate and Hampden Street School.
The lockdowns began around 10.30am this morning and started to lift shortly before 3pm.
In a statement to its Facebook page, Nelson Intermediate said it was in lockdown following advice by police.
“There is an incident in the community but it is contained so there is no immediate danger to any of our students. All students are safe, accounted for and in classes with staff following our school lockdown procedures.”
Victory Primary School told 1News they had been in lockdown for about half an hour.
St John said in a statement it had responded to the incident with one ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and one manager.
Nelson City Council said the incident was causing delays on Waimea Rd and surrounding areas.
“The eBus Route 3 is being diverted away from Motueka St/Franklyn St and this will likely cause delays on Route 3 for the remainder of the day.”
