Strong wind gusts are expected on the Auckland Harbour Bridge tonight and tomorrow, with Waka Kotahi advising road users of the possibility of speed reductions and lane closures.
Wind gusts could reach 75-80km/h from 6pm-9pm on Friday and 10am-2pm on Saturday. During these conditions, the layout of lanes would remain unchanged.
“The bridge will remain in 4 x 4 formation during this time,” a NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi spokesperson said.
Motorists were urged to drive with caution and look out for electronic message boards indicating lane closures and reduced speeds.
Drivers of high sided vehicles and motorcyclists were advised to avoid the Auckland Harbour Bridge and use the Western Ring Route (SH16 and SH18).
In 2020, a truck carrying a shipping container was hit by high winds and tipped over into the bridge’s superstructure, causing damage to a vertical upright column.
