Following a weekend of heavy rain on the West Coast and 30C temperatures for others, MetService has shared what weather could be expected for the week ahead.
Franz Josef experienced its wettest 24 hours in more than four decades on Saturday after 350mm of rain fell across the coast, prompting a local state of emergency to be declared by Mayor Helen Lash which was lifted Sunday afternoon.
Despite lingering rain and isolated showers sticking around for parts of the country, MetService expected the weather to be more settled throughout the week.
The highest recorded temperature so far today was in Wairoa, sitting on a balmy 23C while Murchison held the lowest temperature at 8C.
Both the North and South Islands could expect a “mostly fine” day, apart from the odd afternoon shower inland.
Cloud was expected to increase from midweek, with a few periods of rain that could possibly become heavy by Friday as high pressure spreads across the country.
NIWA said in a post to X that, following a southerly change today, high pressure would settle over New Zealand early this week “bringing lighter winds and more settled conditions”.
“Later this week, low pressure looks to return to us, delivering another round of wind and rain,” the agency said.
