7 Day Sandstone Wilderness Itinerary: THe Ultimate Road Trip!

Sandstone Wilderness is a region in Central Queensland famous for its diverse landscapes, made up of rainforest, sandstone gorges, tropical islands, gem fields, and Aboriginal art sites.

It extends from the Carnarvon Gorge to Yeppoon in the Capricorn Coast region, the gateway to Great Keppel Island. The Sandstone Wilderness also includes Banana Shire and North Burnett.

If you only have seven days, you’re going to want to get your itinerary nailed down to a T as there’s a lot to see and do. So, to help you out, here’s our 7 day Sandstone Wilderness itinerary, which takes you to the highlights and key places!

Day 1-2: Carnarvon Gorge

You can see them in many places, but we saw more kangaroos and pretty face wallabies here than in any other place.

There are plenty of hiking trails of different lengths and abilities.

Day 3: Rubyvale via Emerald

Some of the world’s largest sapphires have been found here with values well into the millions.

Dinner at the Rubyvale Pub

Rubyvale is home to Queensland’s best bush pub, the New Royal Hotel, a title won in 2014. We recommend a pizza!
