‘Incredible people’: Tributes to US tourists killed in Waikato crash

Friends and family have paid tribute to a US couple killed in a Waikato crash earlier this month, describing them as “incredible people” whose “legacy will last a lifetime”.

Josh Greenway, 35, and Amber Stephens, 34, from Phoenix Valley in Arizona, died in a two-vehicle crash in Piarere near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Horahora Rd on the evening of October 15.

A Gofundme appeal – In Memory of Josh and Amber: Support Their Families – was set up to help meet funeral expenses and other costs.

A friend paid tribute to the couple via the page, describing them as “incredible people” who would be remembered for “their impacts on the hearts of so many”.

They described Stephens as a “great friend and a beautiful soul who saw so much beauty in so many small things”.

“She was inspired, creative, kind, and generous with both her time and finances. She went out of her way to help others, and anyone who met her will not soon forget the impression she made.”

Greenway was described as a “beloved comedian” and a connected member of the Phoenix Valley creative scene.

“He impacted so many people in the places he’s lived, leaving a lasting impact on anyone fortunate enough to have spent any amount of time with him.”

Gnome Enclosure, one of the improv groups Greenway was part of, also posted a tribute on Instagram.

“Lovingly nicknamed ‘Bevvy Josh’ for always showing up to team hangouts with a smile and a round of drinks, he brought warmth and humor wherever he went,” the post read.

“We will remember Josh for so many things: his quick wit, his sense of humor that could lift any mood, and the way he threw himself fully into every scene.

“Outside of improv, Josh was the kind of friend who made people feel seen and cared for. He was deeply supportive, genuine, and kind-hearted.

“He cared passionately about his friends, his creative projects, and most of all, about Amber. The love they shared was clear to anyone who saw them together, and our hearts break for the loss of them both.”

Police seek witnesses

Sergeant Shane McNally said police continue to investigate the crash and called for the public’s help.

He said investigators wanted to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or had dashcam footage of “unusual or poor driving behaviour” that involved a grey SUV or a small silver hatchback in the area on October 15.

“Specifically, the driver of a large truck, which was turning into Horahora Rd from State Highway 1 just before the crash that occurred at 7.44pm.

“We’re also seeking information from the driver of a black car that was heading south on State Highway 1 at the time of the crash, and may have seen the silver hatchback behind them or attempting to pass,” McNally said.

Anyone with information was asked to call 105.
