Wgtn shooting: Man jumped off balcony to escape balaclava-clad offender

The victim of a “targeted attack” at a Wellington apartment complex on Sunday had to jump from a balcony to escape a balaclava-wearing offender who was armed with a shotgun, police say.

Armed police were called to the Pukehinau Flats in Brooklyn at 3.35pm on Sunday afternoon after a person “fell” from an apartment balcony amid reports of gunfire. On Monday, police said the offender, who was armed with a shotgun, was targeting a “specific person”.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said today police were still figuring out what exactly happened prior to the shotgun being fired, but shared some new details about what happened.

“We do know that a person wearing a balaclava and carrying a shotgun approached a flat on level 4 of Block A,” he said.

An “altercation” then broke out, and the gun was fired in the hallways as the victim ran away from the offender.

“Fortunately, the victim was not injured by the shot, however he did sustain injuries as he jumped from the southern end second-floor balcony to escape the offender,” Leitch said.

Leitch described it as a “targeted attack”, that exposed the victim and everyone else in the building to an “extreme risk of serious harm”.

He said police continued to investigate what happened, with a scene examination and area canvass now complete. CCTV from the area was also being collected.

Leitch called on anyone with footage of the area around the scene, or dashcam footage from the time to contact police by calling 105.

“There are several pedestrian accessways into the flats from surrounding streets, and a vehicle access from Brooklyn Hill Road the offender may have used,” he said.

“Someone will have seen the offender before or after the incident and we urge them to contact us.

“Others will know who was responsible, and we ask they make contact also,” he says.
