Recall for collectable ‘superhero’ cups sold nationwide at cinemas

A recall has been issued for collectable illuminated cups featuring Marvel superheroes the Fantastic Four sold at Hoyts Cinemas nationwide.

The cups containing a battery-powered light – featuring the Invisible Woman (blue) and the Human Torch (red) – were sold from July 1 to 31 during the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps in New Zealand theatres.

“The cups do not comply with the Product Safety Policy Statement on button batteries because the screw in the battery covering can be removed, and the products are missing warning information about the dangers of button/coin batteries to children and what to do if one is swallowed,” Product Safety said today on its website.

“This means that purchasers, including children, could potentially access the button/coin battery. Children are at risk of choking, serious injury or death if they swallow or place the button/coin battery inside their body.”

Anyone who purchased the cups should discontinue its use and keep them out of reach of children.

People have also been advised not to remove the batteries from the product or dispose of them, but contact Golden Link Australia Pty Ltd to arrange for the product to be returned either for a full refund or to register for a replacement collectable cup.

“If a purchaser has already disposed of the cups, or given them to another person, they should please contact Golden Link Australia Pty Ltd.”

If a person swallowed or inserted a button/coin battery, they were advised to call the National Poisons Centre immediately on 0800 POISON (0800 764 766).

If a child is having difficulty breathing, call 111.
