Firearms seized, 2 arrests, after dirtbiker draws police attention

A helmetless dirtbike rider has attracted the attention of police – resulting in two arrests, the dirtbike being impounded and several firearms being uncovered at a Waikato property.

The man was first observed by police riding a dirtbike without a helmet at around 7.40pm on Monday along Main Rd in Te Kauwhata.

Senior Sergeant Mary van Dongen said police signalled for the man to stop, but he failed to do so.

“Due to the nature of driving, police did not pursue and instead noted down the details of his bike for follow up,” she said.

“Yesterday, police made inquiries at a Te Kauwhata address where they located and impounded the dirtbike.”

While at the property, a farm vehicle that had been reported stolen was discovered, along with drug-related utensils. That discovery prompted a warrantless search, with police finding firearms and ammunition.

Two people were taken into custody.

A 26-year-old man would be appearing in the Huntly District Court on November 25, charged with receiving stolen property, driving while disqualified, failing to stop, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

A 24-year-old man appeared in Huntly District Court today, charged with breaching bail.

Police reminded dirtbike riders to follow road rules, wear protective gear, and ensure their bikes were roadworthy and properly registered.
