Murder charge laid after motorcyclist fatally stabbed in Auckland

Police have charged a 21-year-old man with murder after a motorbike rider was fatally stabbed following a collision in Auckland’s Mount Wellington on Friday.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard told 1News the incident began just after just after midday on Friday when a collision occurred between a motorbike and a blue Nissan March on Harris Rd. During the altercation that followed, the motorbike rider was stabbed.

The injured man left the scene and sought medical treatment at a Lunn Ave medical centre around 12.15pm. He was taken to Auckland Hospital in critical condition but later died.

Beard said the investigation team had worked long hours, and while one person had been arrested, the team were committed to hold all involved to account.

Area canvasses were being undertaken by staff on Harris Rd, where the altercation leading to the man’s death occurred, and around Laud Ave in Ellerslie, where the offenders’ vehicle, a blue Nissan March, was located.

Beard said a CCTV phase would form a “large part” of the investigation.

“Police are still seeking any witnesses and are looking at any new avenue of inquiry. Scene and forensic examinations have been conducted at a number of scenes over the weekend.”

The coroner has ordered there be no publication of the dead man’s name and other personal details while the police investigation is under way.

Beard described the violence as “traumatic”, noting it happened “just after lunch in the middle of a street in a suburban area”.

“We’ve dedicated a large number of resources to the investigation in order to track down those responsible.”

Beard said police were unable to comment on several aspects about the case for operational security reasons, but that “we have been working a pace to find those responsible and hold them to account for this violence”.

Anyone who witnessed Friday’s events or motorists with dashcam footage on Harris Rd or Laud Ave at around 12pm should contact police on 105.

The 21-year-old man will appear in Auckland District Court on Monday, charged with murder and other offences.
