A 49-year-old New Zealander has allegedly been shot and killed in the South African city of Cape Town, local media have reported.
According to South African news outlet The Daily Voice, police said it was thought the man was shot in a robbery in Monte Vista.
“A shooting took place in Mostert Street, alongside the primary school. A resident tried to stop it, using a large sledgehammer,” police told the outlet.
“He was shot dead. The white Toyota Corolla (belonging to suspects) has a smashed back window.”
A resident told The Daily Voice the shot man was from New Zealand, and was the son of the intended victims of the robbery, which the Monte Vista Neighbourhood Watch group said he tried to stop.
Police said they had tracked the car used by the three suspects but no arrests have been made.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed to 1News consular officials were “providing advice to the family of a New Zealander who died in South Africa”.
