A man has appeared in court this morning charged with murder and attempted murder following an alleged shooting on the Coromandel Peninsula yesterday.
Police were called to The 309 Rd in Waiau, Thames, just after 2pm after two people were found with gunshot wounds.
One person was taken into custody following the incident.
This morning, police revealed a 77-year-old man was charged with murder and attempted murder.
Members of the public tried to provide CPR to one person, but they died at the scene. The other person was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital.
“A person transported to hospital with gunshot wounds yesterday remains in hospital in a serious condition,” police said today.
“A post-mortem on the deceased victim will be carried out today.”
The 309 Rd has since reopened, and a scene examination at a property on the road remains ongoing.
“Nearby residents can expect to see a continued police presence in the area,” police said.
Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
The man, who was granted interim name suppression, was remanded in custody to appear in the High Court in Hamilton next Tuesday.
