Parking outside the front entrance to Woolworths Dunedin Central will be temporarily affected as more than 30 bollards are erected between carparks.
A Woolworths New Zealand spokesman said the 34 bollards being installed at the front of the supermarket were for “the safety of our team and customers”.
“We have, unfortunately, seen a significant increase in retail crime and the bollards will reduce the risk of ram-raiding on our store.”
Installation would take about two weeks, depending on weather, and would mean some car parks would be unavailable during this time — 11 in the first week and eight in the second, the spokesman said.
Last month, Dunedin witnessed its first ram-raid in years when an allegedly stolen car ploughed its way through the Golden Centre Mall, in George St.
A yellow Mazda Atenza, allegedly stolen from Brockville, smashed through the glass doors of the mall, driving around the mall’s concourse and unsuccessfully attempted to ram into the Meridian Mall’s Michael Hill Jeweller store.
Less than an hour later, another ram-raid happened at Vaporium in King Edward St, South Dunedin.
