MetService says heavy rain is forecast for areas in both the North and South Islands.
The forecaster said a low to the north of the country is directing a humid subtropical flow over New Zealand, bringing heavy rain to parts of the North Island during Monday.
A front moving east towards southern NZ is also expected to bring heavy rain to parts of the South Island late Monday and during Tuesday.
Orange heavy rain warnings were in place for Coromandel Peninsula and the Kaimai Range, and Gisborne/Tairawhiti north of Tolaga Bay from 9am today into this evening.
Up to 90mm of rain could fall in addition to what has already hit.
The ranges of the Tasman District northwest of Motueka were also under an orange heavy rain warning from 9pm today into Tuesday.
A heavy rain watch was in place for Bryant and Richmond ranges, including the Rai Valley from 11pm this evening until 8am Tuesday, with a period of heavy rain expected.
“Note, further periods of brief heavy rain can be expected during Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night,” MetService said.
MetService said there was a “minimal chance” of the orange warnings being upgraded to red warnings, but warned streams and rivers could rise rapidly.
“Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.”
Drivers urged to take care
In a statement, New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) Waka Kotahi urged drivers in the top of the South Island to keep an eye on road conditions tonight.
In particular it noted State Highway 60 in Tākaka, Golden Bay, State Highway 6 between Nelson and Canvastown, and also State Highway 63 through the Wairau Valley would all be affected by the weather.
“Drivers must be prepared for wet weather driving and take extra care on the roads. Wet roads are slippery so road users should drive to the conditions – reduce speed, increase following distances, and avoid sudden braking,” an NZTA spokesperson said.
