Disgraced Kiwi businessman Ron Brierley has today been arrested and charged with fresh offences of possessing child abuse material.
Brierley, now 87, was arrested by New South Wales Police in Sydney on Tuesday and charged with three counts of possessing child abuse material.
Police confirmed the arrest of an 87-year-old man at his Point Piper home in a statement which did not name Brierley.
“He was refused bail to appear before Waverly Local Court today where he was granted conditional bail to reappear on Tuesday, March 25, 2025,” NSW Police told 1News in a statement.
The Wellington-born multi-millionaire had been a chairman and director for companies in New Zealand, Britain and Australia. He also founded R.A. Brierley Investments — one of the country’s biggest investment companies.
Brierley was knighted in 1988 for services to business management and the community.
He was arrested at Sydney Airport in December 2019 and charged in relation to possessing more than 11,000 images of young girls aged between 4 and 15.
In April 2021, Brierley pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing child abuse material and resigned his knighthood after then-Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern initiated the process of having it removed.
He was jailed for a minimum of seven months, before that was reduced to four months because of his ill health.
The latest charges were laid three years after he was let out of prison on the successful appeal due to his health.
