Much of the North Island can expect rain today, with there also being a risk of thunderstorms, while some roads in the South Island have been affected by snow.
MetService said this morning that “most areas” in the North Island would experience some rain today.
Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay “should stay dry until the afternoon”, MetService said.
It said there was a risk of thunderstorms across the North Island, with “short bursts of heavy rain expected at times”.
Wellington could also expect windier conditions, made up of southerlies gusting at about 100km/h in exposed places. The region was under a strong wind watch.
Between 1am and 7am, Kelburn experienced 20.6mm of rain, while Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt saw 12.8mm and 10.3mm, respectively.
Bluebridge and Interislander cancelled several sailings between Wellington and Picton due to poor conditions and large swells.
Meanwhile in the South Island “persistent rain” would continue for eastern areas as southeasterlies continued.

Between 1am and 7am, 12.8mm of rain was recorded at Christchurch Botanical Gardens and 7.4mm was recorded at Christchurch Airport.
State Highway 8 Fairlie to Lake Pukaki was now open after a closure due to snow, as is SH8 over the Lindis Pass.
The closure came as a cold snap moved up the South Island, prompting several road snowfall warnings from MetService.
MetService said snow was expected across parts of the South Island above 200m today.
Road snow warnings were in place for Lewis Pass (SH7) and Porters Pass (SH73) in the South Island.
In the North Island, Desert Rd (SH1), Remutaka Hill Rd (SH2) and Napier-Taupo Rd (SH5) were also issued road snowfall warnings.
