Veteran broadcaster Simon Dallow has addressed viewers following the announcement of his departure from 1News at Six, describing his 20-year run on the country’s most-watched news bulletin as “an absolute privilege”.
The news of Dallow’s exit was confirmed by TVNZ earlier on Monday, but he addressed it directly on-air that evening.
“I hate talking about myself,” he said, “but after 20 years on TVNZ’s flagship programme, it’s been an absolute privilege to represent my colleagues and bring you the news over those years. I’m now looking forward to whatever the future holds.”
TVNZ confirmed that weekend presenter Melissa Stokes will take over the role. Dallow said viewers would be in “the best of hands” with Stokes, whose career at TVNZ spans more than two decades.

Dallow, who previously worked as a barrister, first joined TVNZ in 1993. Over the years, he has fronted Newsnight, various 1News bulletins, and hosted current affairs programmes Agenda and Q+A.
He began presenting the 6pm bulletin alongside Wendy Petrie and became a trusted face during some of New Zealand’s most significant events — including the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes, the 2019 mosque attacks, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Cyclone Gabrielle.
TVNZ chief executive Jodi O’Donnell said Dallow had been an “exceptional journalist and presenter”, known for bringing professionalism, integrity and dedication to the role.
“His departure marks the end of an era for 1News at Six, and we are deeply grateful for his years of service.”
O’Donnell also said Stokes was respected and that the broadcaster was “incredibly fortunate” to have someone of her calibre appointed as lead presenter.
“She’s done an exceptional job fronting weekends and this experience, alongside the strong leadership role she plays in our newsroom, makes her a natural successor.”
Dallow will present his final bulletin on November 28.
