An offender is on the run with an unspecified amount of cash after an armoured van was robbed while restocking an ATM on Auckland’s North Shore this afternoon.
Security staff were delivering cash to the ATM machine on Birkenhead Ave when they were approached just before 2.30pm. Police did not say how robbery was carried out but said a person made off with money in a case.
“No one has been injured, however, an unconfirmed amount of cash was stolen,” said acting Detective Inspector Simon Harrison.
“The offender fled the immediate scene on foot and, at this stage, we believe he has left in a vehicle.”
Harrison said there would be an increased police visibility in the Birkenhead area in response to the robbery.
“A scene examination is also being carried out, with additional enquiries to follow.”
Anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anyone heading towards a vehicle carrying a case should contact police.
North Shore councillor Richard Hills said he was glad the police were quick to the incident.
“I know many of you are already shaken after the violent incident the week before. Please look out for each other.”
Exactly a week ago, a man was critically injured in a stabbing and found by a member of the public on February 4.
A witness told 1News that they saw a badly injured man lying on the side of the road on his back at around 2pm.
“An elderly lady stopped to help him, then a cop car pulled up.”
Police said they did not believe the stabbing was a “random incident” and were continuing to search for the suspect.
That incident also occurred on Birkenhead Ave, around 250m from today’s robbery.
