The Police Eagle helicopter was subsequently called in so the vehicle’s movements could be monitored from the air.
Auckland City West area prevention manager Insp Wayne Kitcher said officers subsequently “observed this vehicle driving at a concerningly high speed, in some areas almost double the posted speed limit, while amongst other vehicles in peak hour traffic”.
Officers also saw the vehicle being driven on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic.
The pair, aged 17 and 14, were eventually arrested after stopping in Royal Oak and allegedly trying to flee on foot.
“Police are once again astounded at this incredibly dangerous behaviour… We cannot stress enough the concern we have for those choosing to put themselves and other road users in our community at risk,” Kitcher said.
“It is incredibly lucky that once again no one, including those involved, was injured during this incident.”
