A person has died following a “water-related incident” in Northland this afternoon.Police were notified that Coastguard volunteers located a person unresponsive who had been reported overdue at Bland Bay at around 12.45pm.”Despite efforts to resuscitate, the person died,” a spokesperson said.The death will be referred to the Coroner.

Five people have been injured, two critically, after a two-vehicle crash north of Palmerston North this afternoon.Emergency services were notified of the crash on Ashhurst Rd, Bunnythorpe at around 2.15pm.Police said traffic was being diverted while emergency services respond and the serious crash unit conducts a scene examination.St John said it responded to the crash with five ambulances, one rapid response unit, one operations manager and two helicopters.”Two patients, both in critical conditions, were airlifted to Wellington Hospital,” a spokesperson said.”Three further patients, all in serious conditions, transported to Palmerston North Hospital by ambulance.”

Some ferry services have been cancelled this morning due to large swells forecast for Cook Strait from early today.
