“Forests” of red coral have been filmed for the first time off Fiordland’s coast, thrilling researchers. The footage was captured by researchers from Victoria University of Wellington, who said the communities of protected red coral had not previously been seen in such large numbers. They said tens of thousands of corals were seen. The research team used a remotely operated vehicle to capture the footage at depths greater than 100 metres. Fears of ram-raids and rising retail crime has spurred a Dunedin supermarket to take action by installing bollards. Parking outside the front entrance to Woolworths Dunedin Central will be temporarily affected as more than 30 bollards are erected between carparks. A Woolworths New Zealand spokesman said the 34 bollards being installed at the front of the supermarket were for “the safety of our team and customers”. “We have, unfortunately, seen a significant increase in retail crime and the bollards will reduce the risk of ram-raiding on our store.” Installation would take about two weeks, depending on weather, and would mean…
One person has died following a serious crash in Paengaroa, Bay of Plenty overnight.Police were called to the single-vehicle crash at the Kelly Rd and Te Tumu Rd intersection, about 11km from Te Puke around 1am. “One person was located deceased at the scene,” a police spokesperson said.
