‘Bitter night’ for parts of South Island

It has been a “bitter night” for parts of the South Island as plummeting temperatures brought snow and prompted some road closures.

A road snowfall warning remained in place for Lewis Pass (SH7) until later this morning, while a strong wind watch was also in effect for Wairarapa and the Tararua District from 8am until 2pm today, as west to northwest gusts may be severe in exposed places.

The forecaster said Crown Range Summit received a “fresh dusting of snow overnight”.

“It’s been a bitter night for the southern South Island as a cold front has brought some freezing conditions across the region,” the agency said online.

“Snow levels vary, with some reports as low as 200 metres. If you must travel, please take care and drive cautiously.”

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said heavy snow has closed State Highway 87 from Middlemarch to Outram and State Highway 85 between Morrisons and Kyeburn this morning.

It follows a warning yesterday encouraging road users to adjust their driving to the winter-like conditions.

Road users were urged to avoid the area or delay their journeys if possible.

The morning’s headlines in 90 seconds, including spring snow closes roads in the south, a strong quake crumbles buildings in the Philippines, and why the FBI director’s gifts to NZ officials had to be destroyed. (Source: 1News)

“State Highway 8 from Alexandra to Roxburgh is subject to an area warning where road users are advised to take extra care due to snow,” an NZTA spokesperson said.

Chains were required to be carried on State Highway 85 from Ranfurly to Alexandra, also due to snow.
