The body of a woman reported missing near the Waipu River mouth in Northland last night has been found.
She was found by volunteers from Coastguard Whangārei around midday.
Emergency services were called around midnight after the woman’s friends observed her entering the water but not returning.
Coastguard and Waipu Surf Life Saving assisted to conduct shoreline searches.
The initial search, involving Coastguard and Waipu Surf Life Saving and supported by a rescue helicopter continued until 3.00am, Coastguard said earlier, before resuming again this morning.
In an updated statement this afternoon, police said the woman’s death will be referred to the coroner.
