Cardrona Hotel to remain in New Zealand hands after sale

The famous Cardrona Hotel will remain in Kiwi hands after being sold to a group of New Zealand investors with ties to Central Otago.

The 162-year-old heritage-listed hotel, pub, and restaurant, located between Wānaka and Queenstown, has been sold for an undisclosed sum, with the new owners taking possession on November 3.

The business would be run by Warren Barclay, a Wānaka local with a background in corporate hospitality.

Barclay owned Experience Group, which managed hospitality for major sporting events, but would step back from day-to-day operations there to take on the role of Cardrona Hotel publican.

“We’re incredibly proud to take on the stewardship of such a special part of New Zealand’s story,” he said.

“The Cardrona Hotel holds a unique place in the hearts of so many, and we’re committed to preserving its heritage while exploring thoughtful ways to enhance its boutique accommodation, dining, event offerings and overall guest experience.”

The hotel would continue to operate as usual, with no immediate changes planned to staffing or services, Barclay added.

Departing owner Cade Thornton, who had overseen the hotel’s operations for the past 13 years, thanked the community and the hotel’s guests for their support.

“It’s been an honour to be part of the Cardrona Hotel’s legacy, and we look forward to becoming ‘locals’ ourselves. We’re delighted to see it passed on to passionate new custodians who share a love for the region and its heritage.”

The sale of the building attracted national and international attention after Thornton announced the private listing in July.

Interest came from potential buyers in New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and Singapore during the six-week campaign, he said.

“I’m really happy with how it’s all turned out. It’s been a successful outcome for both parties.”
