Cheesecake Shop thief takes two cakes, comes back for seconds

An Auckland dessert shop has been left bemused after a late-night break-in where the offender took no cash and instead made off with five of its 12-inch cheesecakes.

The store manager at The Cheesecake Shop NZ in Papatoetoe, who asked not to be named, told 1News their store alarm was triggered around 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Security footage showed a man had smashed through the front door and headed straight for a locked fridge containing some of the shop’s larger cheesecakes.

After getting into the fridge he made off with two cakes, then returned about five minutes later and stole another three.

The man stole two 12-inch cheesecakes, before returning several minutes later for more.

“It’s a lot of effort just to go and get cakes,” the store manager said.

“He clearly wanted something, or had the late-night munchies.”

Police arrived at the store about 20 minutes after the initial break-in, but the offender had already left.

Nothing else was touched in the store, including the cash register, company laptops, or the main cake display which held more than 40 cake varieties.

Staff were able to see the lighter side of the incident.

“Clearly our cakes offer a great taste if people are willing to break in for them,” the manager said.

The store was back to business as usual in the morning, with no major structural damage besides the broken glass door.

It’s the second incident at the shop this year. In March, the store front was damaged, with someone later wandering in and taking a single caramel glazed mud cake.

Despite that, the shop was grateful for the “fantastic” support of its community.
