Dilworth: Man, 72, charged with historical indecency

Another man has been charged with sex crimes as police continue to investigate historical sexual offending at Auckland’s Dilworth School.

A number of former staff and people connected with the school have been charged or convicted over historical abuse.

Today, police said a 72-year-old man has been charged with three counts of indecency with a boy aged between 12 and 16.

“These charges relate to additional alleged offending that has been identified as part of our ongoing inquiries,” Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greaves said.

The man will appear in the Auckland District Court tomorrow.

Greaves said investigators had spoken with a number of former students of the school who had been identified as victims of sexual assault while at the school.

“While we have spoken to more than 150 former students, I still encourage anyone with information that hasn’t spoken with the investigation team yet to get in touch,” he said.

Those with information were asked to call 105.

In March Dilworth formally apologised to survivors of historic sexual abuse, acknowledging it had “buried, blocked, ignored and denied” horrors over decades.

An independent inquiry in 2023 identified 175 victims of abuse at the school but acknowledged that the total number could exceed 230. The offending occurred from the 1950s until 2005, with decades of abuse cover-up.

The Dilworth Trust Board has set aside more than $50 million for compensation payments. The trust, which runs the school established in the early 1900s to educate disadvantaged boys, currently holds assets worth close to a billion dollars.
