Electric bus crashes into transport hub in Auckland’s New Lynn

An electric Auckland Transport bus has crashed spectacularly into a New Lynn bus and train station this afternoon – with concerns over smoke coming from batteries on the vehicle.

An Auckland Transport spokesperson told 1News emergency services were on scene following the crash.

“We are working with emergency services to make the area safe.”

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it was called to a bus crashing into the New Lynn Station at 4.45pm.

“We have two crews in attendance – one from Glen Eden and one from Avondale. We are monitoring the batteries, which are smoking.”

A witness at the scene told 1News they heard a smash from the crash, followed by a “loud pop” coming from the area.

They then saw smoke coming from the top of the bus as passengers disembarked.

The witness added about 10 buses were backed up along the road behind the crash.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of the incident and responded with two ambulances.

One patient was treated at the scene and did not require transportation to hospital, it said.

Auckland Transport said there would be disruptions to timetabled services in the area.

Route 18 buses would be detoured through Memorial Dr, Rankin Ave, and Clark St.

Routes 14, 18, 152 and 154 would all stop and end their trips from New Lynn bus station stop E until further notice.
