Fleeing man allegedly ditched gun before hiding under child’s bed

A man has been taken into custody after he was found hiding under a child’s bed in Auckland – having allegedly run off from police while trying to ditch a gun.

Inspector Nina Pedersen said the dramatic scenes began to unfold when officers spotted a speeding vehicle on the Northern Motorway near Puhoi.

The vehicle was confirmed as stolen and was tracked speeding off the motorway at Ōrewa, carrying on through Silverdale and south to Albany. The Eagle helicopter then continued monitoring it.

The vehicle was spiked on Oteha Valley Rd, and the two men got out of the vehicle on Kallista Pl in Browns Bay. Pedersen said they then fled into a nearby property.

One surrendered to police “immediately”, while the other, seen carrying a gun, hid the weapon on a roof and jumped over fences into nearby properties, Pedersen said.

Cordons were put in place, and a dog handler was called in.

The inspector said the man was found attempting to hide under a child’s bed.

“He has resisted arrest and received a small dog bite, which was treated at the scene,” Pedersen said.

Officers also recovered a weapon.

A 29-year-old man was scheduled to appear in the North Shore District Court today, charged with unlawfully getting into a vehicle, possession of an offensive weapon, resisting police and unlawfully in a building.

A 37-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, possession of methamphetamine and contravening a protection order. He was also due to appear in the North Shore District Court today.
