Gisborne homicide probe: Vehicle of interest movements sought

Police investigating the murder of Bill Maangi in Gisborne last month are seeking the movements of a vehicle of interest.

Maangi, 36, was found critically injured on the front lawn of a property between Lytton Rd and Riperata St at around 4am on September 29 after he was shot.

He died in Gisborne Hospital a short time later, despite efforts to save him.

Detective Inspector Martin James said police were making good progress in the investigation but needed the public’s assistance.

A Hyundai Sonata with the registration AFN215 was stolen from accommodation lodge Forrester House on Ormond Rd sometime between 7.30pm and midnight on September 28.

The vehicle was seen heading into Riperata St, turning left onto Lytton Rd, before turning right into the Elgin area.

It was seen again at around 9am on September 29 in the Stout St/Aberdeen Rd area.

James said police recovered the vehicle from Churchill St on October 20.

“We are urging anyone who may have information, or saw the pictured Hyundai Sonata at any time between Sunday 28 September and Monday 20 October, to please come forward immediately.”

The vehicle was currently undergoing forensic examination.

He earlier said: “Mr Maangi didn’t deserve to die this way, and I urge those who know what happened to reach out to us.”

Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.
