An injured man spent the night in a car wreck after he crashed 15 metres down a bank onto rocks on Great Barrier Island last night.
Police were alerted to the single-vehicle crash on Puriri Bay Rd at about 7.50am.
“Police understand the vehicle has come off the road and down an embankment last night,” a statement said.
“The driver was trapped and managed to alert members of the public to his whereabouts using the vehicles horn this morning.”
The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was notified five minutes later and responded, airlifting the man to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.
Police said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.
