A homicide investigation is underway after a man died in a shooting in Auckland’s Ponsonby overnight.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton said emergency services responded to “reports of a firearm being discharged” outside an address on Ponsonby Rd at around 10.18pm.
“Upon arrival, a man was located deceased,” he said.
“Inquiries to locate the person believed to be responsible remain ongoing.”
Cordons manned by armed officers remain in place this morning and Bolton said the community can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
A body covered by a white sheet could earlier be seen on the footpath of Ponsonby Rd. Locals told 1News they heard gunshots last night.
Bolton said a “number of witnesses” have been spoken to.
“While at this stage no arrests have been made, police are following lines of inquiry.”
A post mortem and formal identification of the victim will be carried out over the coming days.
NZTA Waka Kotahi said due to a “police incident” Ponsonby Rd is closed between Franklin and Richmond roads.
“Please avoid the area and expect long delays.”
“Police encourage anyone else who was in the area or has information to assist who have not yet spoken to us to please get in touch,” Bolton said.
