A homicide investigation has been launched after a teenage boy died in a “serious incident” in Napier overnight.
Police were called to a disorder event on Alexander Ave in Onekawa at around 3.10am today.
Detective Inspector Martin James said a teenage boy was found critically injured at an Alexander Ave address upon arrival.
He died at the scene despite efforts by ambulance staff.
“At the same time, a second injured teenager was located at a Cottrell Cres address,” James said.
He was taken to hospital in a serious condition but has since been discharged.
A disorder incident involving a group on Dinwiddie Ave may be linked, James said.
“Inquiries are in the very early stages and Police are providing support to the whānau of both victims.”
A scene examination is ongoing and cordons remain in place at the intersections of Hitchings Ave and Alexander Ave, Dinwiddie Ave and Wallis Pl, and Alexander Ave near Dinwiddie Ave.
“Police will have a noticeable presence in the area while that work continues,” James said.
“We are speaking with a number of people as part of the investigation, but we urgently want to hear from anyone who was in the area, or anyone who took photos or video of the altercation on Dinwiddie Ave.
“A number of investigators are working to determine what occurred and why, and we urge anyone who can assist our enquiries to contact us as soon as possible.”
