After Auckland and parts of the East Coast were lashed with heavy rain earlier this week, MetService has released its outlook on how the weather looks for the rest of the week.
Heavy rain saw roads closed and homes flooded yesterday and Monday night. Some people were forced to evacuate their homes in Ngongotahā, near Rotorua, while a woman was rescued from her car by “heroic” line workers in Ngakura, south of Rotorua. The car was stuck on a flooded section of road.
It comes after a sub-tropical low moved across the upper parts of the North Island, with Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Tairāwhiti, and Hawke’s Bay.
So how does the weather look for the rest of the week?
According to MetService, rain “continues to feed” into eastern parts of the North Island.
An orange heavy rain warning is still in place for northern parts of Hawke’s Bay into tomorrow — an area north of Napier-Taupō Rd (SH5).
Heavy rain watches have also been issued for the rest of Hawke’s Bay, the Tararua District, and Tairāwhiti.
The rain is expected to stay on the East Coast tomorrow “but with some drier and brighter weather further to the west”.
While the North Island bore the brunt of the rain, the South Island also saw some flooding.
Parts of Christchurch saw some surface flooding which led to some roads being forced to shut.
MetService said that while there are no rain warnings for the south, “it’ll be a cold start with temperatures set to be below freezing first thing”.
However, any early fog will clear “to leave a fine morning before the cloud arrives ahead of the next band of rain moving in from the south”.
The weekend will see the return of south-westerly winds “sweeping” the country.
