‘Huge bang’: Vehicle on fire after going over bank in Northland

A vehicle has fallen down a bank and reportedly caught fire in Northland this afternoon.

Police said the single vehicle crash occurred on Whangārei Heads Road in Tamaterau.

Road diversions were in place on Mackesy Rd and Owhiwa Rd.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area, as road closures may be in place for “some time”, according to police.

Near the scene, Cherrie Parker told 1News of a “huge bang and the smell of smoke”.

“There were a few loud explosions and the smell of burning rubber. Traffic is stopped and the road is blocked.”

She said the fire appeared to have since been put out by the fire brigade.

In a statement to 1News, Hato Hone St John said it had “concluded its involvement” as there were “no patients”.
